MAKING THE DIFFERENCE
Liberia is amongst the poorest nations in the world, a country that's recuperating from it's past 14 years of civil conflict and a wide spread of the Ebola virus which took away many lives. Education, Health Care are at it's lowest. The current system is supposed to ensure free education for all students but the infrastructure is not available, and facilities are low quality and not stable. Hence the need for a school that has to charge tuition. Only about 50% of children complete lower primary school (Gr 1 to 6), and a typical child will receive a little over 4 years of formal schooling. It is estimated that nearly 90% of children age 10 are unable to read and understand age-appropriate text. More than half the students in what is equivalent to pre-school are 6 years or older due to delays in enrollment Less than 1/4 of all schools have electricity; 1/3rd do not have hand-washing facilities
1/3 of primary teachers are unqualified. #1 on the Access to Education challenges list is: Limited availability and quality of learning spaces .
